There are three types of passports issued by the Immigration and Passport Department of Grenada: Regular, service, and diplomatic.

Regular

A regular passport is the standard passport issued to citizens of Grenada. There are different ways to become a citizen of Grenada and obtain a passport, such as by birth, naturalization, marriage, or investment.

Diplomatic

A diplomatic passport is issued to Grenadian diplomats who are accredited abroad, as well as their eligible dependents. Citizens of Grenada who reside within the country and travel abroad for diplomatic work are also issued this passport.

 Validity of the Grenada passport

A passport from Grenada is valid for five years. Once this period is over, you will need to renew your passport in order for it to remain valid and allow you to travel internationally.

 Grenada e-passports

In 2018, Grenada became the sixth Caribbean country to introduce an e-Passport, following Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the Bahamas, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The first people to receive their e-Passports were Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell and Her Excellency Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade.

Features of the e-passport

e-Passports have specific biometric features and a radio frequency identification chip (RFID). The chip is embedded in the back cover of the passport and contains biometric information used to authenticate the passport holder’s identity.

Obtaining a Grenada Passport

There are several ways to obtain citizenship in Grenada, namely by descent or birth, marriage, and investment.

Grenada citizenship by descent or birth

Children born in Grenada automatically become citizens. A child born abroad to at least one parent who is a Grenada national will be granted citizenship in the country. Additionally, a child who is adopted by a citizen of Grenada can claim nationality.

Grenada citizenship by naturalization

If you are a long-term resident of Grenada, you are eligible to apply for citizenship. Foreign residents can apply for a passport after residing in the country for seven years, while citizens of the Commonwealth can apply for a passport after five years of residence.

Grenada citizenship by marriage

If you are married to a Grenada citizen, you are eligible to apply for citizenship. It does not matter if your spouse was born in Grenada or was naturalized as a citizen, you are eligible to apply for a passport either way.

Grenada citizenship by investment

Launched in 2013, the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program allows qualifying individuals and their families to get a Grenada passport in exchange for an investment in the country’s economy that amounts to at least $150,000.

There are two routes you can take to obtain citizenship:

Investment in the National Transformation Fund (NTF): The National Transformation Fund was established to boost Grenada’s economy. The main applicant has to make a contribution of at least $150,000 to obtain a passport or donate $200,000 as a family of four.

Investment in pre-approved real estate: Two options are available for a real estate investment. The investor can make a joint investment at a minimum value of $220,000 per person or purchase a pre-approved property at a minimum value of $350,000. In both cases, the property must be held for five years if the buyer wants to become an economic citizen of Grenada.
