Malta entry restrictions in response to coronavirus
The first COVID-19 case was filed on 7 March 2020. As with the rest of the EU and Schengen Area, member countries imposed an EU-wide ban on third-country nationals in mid-March 2020. Malta also extended the entry ban to include EU and Schengen Area nationals but has since reopened its borders. Before you travel ensure that you meet the criteria to enter the country by checking on the government website and following government advice when you are in Malta.

General required documents for Maltese Visa application:
The general required documents for a Maltese Visa application are the following:
- A Schengen Visa Application form can be found here. You can complete the application electronically and then print a hard-copy.
- Two photos must be attached. The photo should be of passport format, be recent, and have the whole face captured with a light background.
- Your passport and copies of visas that you have held before – are valid for at least three months beyond the return date. Your passport must have at least two blank pages.
- A copy of your return-ticket reservation. We do not recommend purchasing the ticket before obtaining the visa, if not otherwise required.
- Confirmed travel medical insurance of a minimum of EUR 30,000 € within Malta and the Schengen area.
- A visa cover letter to state your purpose of visiting Malta and an itinerary.
- Flight ticket reservation, if applicable
- Proof of civil status
- Proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay in Malta
- Means of subsistence – proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself for the duration of your stay in Malta. According to information by the European Commission, a foreign national who would like to enter the territory of Malta must show that they have at least 48€ per day for the duration of their stay in the country.

- Employment contract
- Current bank statement of the previous six months
- No objection certificate from the employer
- Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary
If self-employed:
You will need to show:
- A copy of your business license
- Company bank statement for the previous six months
- Income Tax Return (ITR)
If a student:
- Proof of enrollment
- Leave approval letter from school or university
If retired:
- Pension statement for the past six months
If applicable:
- Regular income generated by property proof for the previous six months
Note that the signed application form will need to be accompanied by the rest of the above-mentioned mandatory documents. The documents will need to be handed in personally to the appropriate embassy or consulate or its representative in your home country.

Malta Tourist Schengen Visa additional requirements:
For the Malta Tourist Visa or “visit Malta Visa” you will need the following documents:
- Invitation address and phone number from a family member or a sponsor in Malta, if applicable.
- Bank statement for the previous six months.
- Passport copies.
Malta Visa for Business Purposes:
For the Malta Visa for business purposes, you will need the following documents:
- An invitation from the Maltese company that you are paying a visit to, including the company’s address in Malta, accompanied by the dates of your visit.
- A certificate from your employer stating your business travel.
- Proof of previous trade relations between the two companies, if applicable
- Business bank statement of the previous six months.
- Memorandum and Article of Association in original certified copy (registered with joint-stock companies), Trade License (first issued and present renewal), Proprietorship or Partnership documents.
- Regarding the applicant’s expenses during their stay in the Schengen area, either the employer or the partner company will need to state the coverage of expenses on the invitation letter.
Malta Visa for Medical Purposes:
For the Malta Visa for medical purposes, you will need the following documents:
- A local medical report.
- Medical attestation from the medical practitioner in Malta (hospital or doctor), confirming the date of your appointment and your medical situation.
- Payment receipt of medical fees.

Applying for a visa to Malta in Australia
Australian passport holders will not need a visa for short stay trips to Malta. However, it is important to note that foreign residents that reside in Australia might need to apply for a Schengen Visa in order to be permitted to enter the country.

Applying for a visa to Malta in Canada
Canadian passport holders will not need a visa for a short-term stay in Malta. However, foreign residents that reside in Canada may need a Schengen Visa to be able to enter the country. You can see whether you need a visa to enter Malta here.

Applying for a visa to Malta in the UK
For a Malta Visa UK passport holders can enter Malta without a visa, or any other permit type, in advance. However, if you are visiting Malta from the EU and a national of a non_schengen country that has not established visa-free regimes to the Schengen states, a visa will be required.
