Frequently Asked Questions

The UK Innovator Founder Visa is a three-year visa for entrepreneurs who want to start or grow an innovative, viable, and scalable business in the UK. It replaced the former Start-up and Innovator visas and requires approval from an endorsing body for the business idea. There is no minimum investment requirement, and the visa can lead directly to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

The Innovator Founder visa allows you to live in the UK for 3 years, whether you apply from abroad or switch from another visa. You can extend the visa as many times as needed, and you may be able to apply for permanent residence (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after 3 years, if you meet the requirements.

The UK Innovator Founder Visa is for entrepreneurs with a new, original business idea that is innovative, viable, and scalable, and approved by an authorised endorsing body. Applicants must be 18 or over, meet B2 English language requirements, and show enough personal savings to support themselves. There is no minimum investment amount, and the business does not need to be trading yet.

To qualify for a UK Innovator Founder visa, you must start a new and original business that can grow and scale, and it must be approved by an authorised endorsing body. The focus is on innovation, not just profit, with common examples including fintech, greentech, AI, advanced healthcare, and sustainable or tech-driven products. The business must not be trading yet and should show clear potential to grow in the UK and internationally.

Applicants for the UK Innovator Founder Visa must show English proficiency at B2 level (CEFR) in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This can be proven by passing a Secure English Language Test like IELTS for UKVI with at least 5.5 in each skill, having a degree taught in English, or being a citizen of a majority English-speaking country.

The UK Innovator Founder visa costs ยฃ1,274 if you apply from outside the UK, or ยฃ1,590 if you switch or extend your visa inside the UK. You must also pay a ยฃ1,000 endorsement fee, ยฃ500 for each of at least two required check-in meetings, and an annual ยฃ1,035 Immigration Health Surcharge.

Since 13 April 2023, the UK Innovator Founder Visa no longer requires a ยฃ50,000 minimum investment. Instead, applicants must show an endorsing body that they have realistic and reliable funds to carry out their business plan. The main focus is on whether the business is innovative, viable, and able to grow, rather than on a fixed investment amount.

The UK Innovator Founder Visa is sometimes seen as difficult to get because the endorsement stage is very strict. Applicants must prove that their business idea is truly innovative, realistic, and able to grow. Since the visa is aimed at entrepreneurs with original, high-potential ideas, securing endorsement is usually the hardest part of the process.
