Unlike many Caribbean or European CBI models, Argentina’s approach will be administered by a dedicated agency under the Ministry of Economy, which will evaluate investments, conduct security and background checks, and coordinate with the National Migration Directorate on approval. Once regulations are finalized, applications could be processed within months, making it one of the fastest citizenship routes globally – and an appealing option for high-net-worth individuals seeking broader mobility and Mercosur access.  

However, experts caution that the success of Argentina’s program will hinge on clear regulations, economic stability, and how the investment criteria are defined in practice. While it promises a new roadmap to Argentine citizenship without lengthy residence, investors should prepare for rigorous due diligence, potential tax implications, and the realities of Argentina’s broader economic and political context before committing. 

Special cases (Citizenship by Exception)

In some instances, individuals may be eligible for citizenship through special provisions. For example, refugees or stateless persons may be eligible for citizenship if they meet specific criteria.

The steps for obtaining Argentine citizenship are as follows:

Step 1: Choose your preferred route: whether naturalization, descent, birth, marriage, or special cases. 

Step 2: Begin your residency application: If choosing naturalization, pick the appropriate visa, such as the Rentista Visa, and apply. The citizenship clock starts from the date you establish legal residence in Argentina, so it is important to apply as soon as possible.

Step 3: Obtain temporary residence: Submit your residency application to the National Directorate of Migration (DNM). You will receive a temporary residence certificate while your application is processed. Temporary residence is valid for one to two years, depending on the visa category, and is renewable.
